Abdulkadir Dube Mohamed
The man behind the book, and the reason this platform exists.
Abdulkadir Dube Mohamed compiled the Burji to English Language book to help the Burji community here and abroad learn and uphold the language, “so that we may preserve it and remove it from the list of languages on the brink of extinction.”
He drew on years of his own research and knowledge, organising the language into 39 categories that run from a Latin-based alphabet and simple grammar to vocabulary, idioms, sayings and riddles. He also included a summary of Burji traditional law and administrative structures.
“This book is basically the Burji language translated into English… it will pave the way for the future Burji grammar books.”
With gratitude to his wife Amina Dawe, and to Laddo Darro, Hussein Mohamed, Hassan Mohamed, Abduljalil Aila, Baqe Luba, Galge Hirbo, Marru Dawe, Jibbo Yayyo, Sode Woshe, Wolasa Hasse, Marsa Doffa, Abebe Argamos and many others who gave their time, riddles, sayings and knowledge.
